Fighting Climate Change with Blockchain
Record Temperatures and the Paris Agreement
Parts of the United States have been dealing with a long stretch of sweltering heat, and data suggests that summer temperatures will continue to rise. This year, July 6 was the record for hottest day ever recorded – possibly even in 100,000 years. In order to prevent global warming from exceeding 1.5 degrees Celsius above preindustrial levels, countries around the world agreed in 2015’s Paris Agreement to try and phase out burning fossil fuels.
The Solution: Clean Energy
As modern society needs massive amounts of power, organizations like Energy Web are looking towards clean energy sources as a way to replace fossil fuels without sacrificing electricity needs. Clean energy sources are those which do not emit greenhouse gasses into the atmosphere when used for electricity production or other purposes.
The Agenda Podcast on Climate Change
On Episode 15 of The Agenda podcast, hosts Jonathan DeYoung and Ray Salmond spoke with Energy Web CEO Jesse Morris about his views on climate change, decarbonization and how blockchain technology can help facilitate a transition to clean energy sources. According to Morris, it’s all about making clean energy cost-effective so that businesses will adopt it without hesitation.
Blockchain Technology Available Now
Morris explained that blockchain technology is already built and readily available for use in transitioning away from fossil fuels towards more sustainable options such as solar or wind power. By using blockchain technology for tracking carbon emissions as well as providing incentives for businesses to utilize renewable resources, we can make great strides in fighting climate change while still meeting our current needs for electricity production and consumption.
Conclusion
Climate change is a serious issue facing humanity today which requires urgent action if we are going to remain under 1.5 degrees Celsius of warming since preindustrial times according to scientists’ predictions.. Fortunately, organizations like Energy Web are working hard on finding solutions such as utilizing blockchain technology in order facilitate a transition towards cleaner energies which do not emit greenhouse gases into our atmosphere when used or produced.
